Aluminum Driveway Gate

This job was installed just a few week ago in the city of Royal Oak.  This homeowner approached us with this design.  They wanted something very simple yet have a very ornamental look.  They also had fencing installed to match the gate.  Their neighbors also installed the same style fencing and driveway gate, so the neighborhood looks amazing!

Iron Gates with Operator

Troy Ornamental Iron & Fence is a family owned business that has been operating for over 20 years.  We take our work very seriously and every job is built as if we were building it for ourselves.  One of my favorite jobs personally is this beautiful custom built iron gate with operator for a private residence in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.  With a gate this size many of our customers opt for a gate operator instead of operating these massive gates manually.  The gate operators have a great warranty, with many minimal maintenance.  Check out our website at www.troyfence.com to take a look at other gates and operators we have built and installed in Oakland County, Macomb County, and Wayne County.  Thanks for checking out our blog as well!  Hope you enjoyed the information!

Another Gate with Operator in Bronze!

So, I’m on a roll with the iron gates and operators.  Heres another operator with an iron gate.  This gate is different than the other one I just posted.  This iron gate is actually powder coated and primed in our bronze color.  We always powder coat and prime all of our iron work.  This process helps the iron stay clean and rust free.  This gate operator installed on this gate is a commercial grade operator that can stand a lot of traffice in and out.  You also need to have a nice heavy duty iron gate to stand the traffic as well.  Anyway you can check out our website at www.troyfence.com  Thanks for checking out our blog, we try our best to give some usefull information about our products, but if you would like some more information and more details please feel free to give us a call!

Installing a Gate

    Installing Gate Posts

  1. Step 1

    Collect the following:
    2 x 3 lumber
    4 x 4 fence posts
    1 x 6 fence boards
    Concrete
    Measuring tape
    Galvanized nails or non-rusting screws
    Fence post digger (or auger)
    Gate hardware (hinges and latch)

  2. Step 2

Use the fence post digger to dig 2 holes at least 3 feet apart. Remember, you want the gate to be wide enough to allow easy passage of yard tools and equipment into the yard (things like a wheelbarrow).

  3. Step 3

Ensure the holes are at least 2 feet deep and 10 to 12 inches wide. (If you live in areas where the ground freezes the hole should be deeper, probably 3 to 4 feet to get below the frost line).

  4. Step 4

Mix and pour cement into the holes, then install the fence posts.

  5. Step 5

Check and adjust the alignment of the posts so they are plumb and square to each other.

  6. Step 6

Allow the cement to dry/set up for 24 hours

  7. Building the Gate

  8. Step 1

Measure and cut your 2 x 3′s for the gate frame so you will have 1″ of clearance on each side.

  9. Step 2

Layout the gate frame by placing 2 x 3′s on edge and nailing the corners together.
Measure diagonally from corner to corner–and adjust the layout until the measurements are the same. (This will ensure the gate will be square).

  10. Step 3

Install corner bracing by measuring, cutting and installing a piece of 2 x 3 lumber running diagonally from corner to corner.

  11. Step 4

Measure, cut and install a piece of 2 x 3 (laid flat) horizontally across the mid point of the gate to act as a brace.

  12. Step 5

Attach your fence boards to the frame using galvanized nails or screws that won’t rust. The boards should be flush with the edge of the frame and extend equally above and below the frame.

  13. Installing the Gate

  14. Step 1

Place your gate between the fence posts and hold it in place with bracing so the bottom is properly positioned (raised off the ground) and the sides are 1″ from the posts.

  15. Step 2

Attach a hinge to each of the horizontal framing 2 x 3′s and then to the fence post.

  16. Step 3

Attach your gate latch to the other side of the gate and gate post
